How to Thank Your Caregiver

NOTE: The following blog post is a guest post. This post was originally created by Emily Gibson of Siege Media.

How to Thank Your Caregiver

The relationship between a patient and their caregiver is an emotional and important one. Whether your caregiver is a family member or hired professional, they are there for you to help as you age or navigate illness. When someone is there for you through so much, it’s important to make them feel loved and valued in return.

A small gift of gratitude — during the holiday season and beyond — can help your caregiver feel appreciated, and can help them feel like their work is important. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on a luxury item, either. Your gift can be a personal or sentimental item that will mean just as much.

We’ve rounded up some caregiver gift ideas to help you find the perfect “thank you” for your caregiver.

1. Thank You Card

A greeting card is a classic gift that is sure to lift your caregiver’s spirits. You can use this printable thank you card to convey your gratitude and let your caregiver know how much they mean to you. A bonus about a greeting card: you can write whatever message you want on the inside, making it highly personal and sentimental.

2. Coffee Basket

Caregiving is a demanding job that sometimes requires long hours. If your caregiver likes coffee, gift them their own coffee care package complete with gourmet coffee beans, a fun mug and chocolate covered coffee beans. For mornings they don’t have time to make their own cup, you can even include a gift card to a coffee shop.

3. Gift Card

Sometimes the best gift is the ability to choose your own gift. A gift card to a store your caregiver likes — or a general Visa gift card that they can spend however they like — is a fun and exciting gift. You can even use a printable gift card holder to make your gift more personalized.

4. Time Off

With a job as demanding as caregiving, a few hours off can be the best gift. Make alternate plans for a night and give your caregiver the night or weekend off to relax and recharge. Make sure you communicate your alternate plans with your caregiver so they won’t worry, and encourage them to spend their time relaxing and having fun.

5. Comfortable Clothes and Slippers

Everyone deserves a little bit of comfort. Give your caregiver some comfortable pajamas and slippers to make their time at home relaxing and luxurious. To take the gift a step further, you can even include a sleeping mask to help them rest.

There are many ways to thank your caregiver. Whether you choose a physical gift or just a heartfelt “thank you,” they are sure to appreciate your sentiment. It feels good to take care of those who take care of us!

You Are Loved

John B. Marine | January 18, 2019 | | | | Be the first to comment!
I recently celebrated my birthday on January 15 of this year, and this gave me some time to reflect. While I am pleased to celebrate another year of existence, I am more pleased gaining so many birthday wishes from others across social media. A time like a birthday, an anniversary, or even death in family and/or friends can make you wonder if people really do care about you. A fallacy of social media is that you seem to not like people as much if they don't immediately respond to you in the event of anything mentioned here. Fact is, not everyone uses social media religiously. So if you fall into this situation, think otherwise.

Through Facebook, I received over 70 posts to my timeline on my birthday. I usually have averaged 50-70 posts when it was my birthday. I even got a handful of birthday wishes through Twitter and Instagram. People didn't have to wish me a happy birthday or care that I have a birthday, but they offered their birthday wishes to me out of the goodness of others' hearts. They realize something like a birthday is a joyous and happy occasion. It means you have lasted long enough and have enjoyed being able to live and make yourself worthy to others. I was so pleased people worldwide took time out of their day to wish me a happy birthday. They were not required to, but they did.

Then there was a time when I discussed being away from online in 2017 when I was hospitalized for surgery for an infection. I was pleasantly surprised at the outpouring of support from others. Even people who didn't normally see my posts or comment on Facebook were offering their support. I have meant something to people so much that my presence is significant. If I passed away, it would feel like a huge void and huge hole would be in our world in replacing me.

Usually, I am told not to share some of my best and worst time since the only person who cares about these things is myself. However, there is a reason why I post things about my life. The big reason is to release my problems instead of bottle them in. Also, I am hoping my issues and advice can help others who may be in a similar situation.

What to Take Away From This Post.

If you have made a difference in others' lives and if you have meant some sort of importance in others' lives, you will gain the love and respect from other people. People love you even if you don't love yourself. You may need to find new people to befriend you if you feel the ones you are with don't trust or love you enough. Also, you don't ask for people to get into your life, but you appreciate that the ones who are in your life offer you their love and support. People who are sincere and honest will be the ones who offer their loving adoration and support even if they don't know you personally. It is always nice to know people care about you and worry about you.

I create stories like these and provide insight like this to help people feel better about themselves and others. I feel if we do not like ourselves much or feel loved by others, we don't love ourselves much. This leads to lower self-esteem, self-destruction, and at the worst- suicide (or at least suicidal thoughts). So we need to remind ourselves and recognize there are good people in this world and that there are people who do care about us. Even those who care even one iota about you are people you can appreciate and admire. We need things in our lives to remind us that people do care and that life can be enjoyable. Having people who care is one way to prove that point.

Most of all... I am posting this to say that you don't ask for people to offer you their kindness. However, in light of certain situations, it is always nice to know people care, even if remotely. So be thankful for the ones who stick with you and love you. People come and go, but love never dies or fails.

Long story short...

You are loved, and people DO care.

Birthdays

John B. Marine | January 15, 2018 | | | Be the first to comment!
January 15 is my birthday. So for this blog post, I want to talk about birthdays. One thing that is always great is to look back on how long you've lived so far. You may surprise yourself over this. When it comes to birthdays, the first thing that crosses my mind is wondering just what all I have been through. It is as if to say I am not supposed to live as long as I have. However, we all try to live for as long as we can while going through many aspects of our lives. We go through everything from being in decent health to facing things like being sick (or maybe even injured). We go through pain physically and emotionally. All the while, living life as best as we can. To celebrate an occasion like a birthday simply brings joy to all of us. Knowing we've lived so long and to have such opportunities to make the most of each day is worthy of celebration. Because of this, having a birthday and celebrating it brings us great joy.

Only thing more special than celebrating a birthday is having others wish you a happy birthday. It is a wonderful feeling when people take time out of their day and acknowledge your birthday and offer you birthday wishes. People don't have to do this or feel they are required to do so. However, it is a great feeling knowing people care this much. That, to me, is a much better feeling than celebrating a birthday. It is even better knowing you are loved and respected among a vast audience who wishes you a happy birthday. That's why on Facebook, I get so many birthday wishes from my friends. I don't care who offers birthday wishes or who is first to wish me a happy birthday- I am just thankful people think about me and offer their kindest words on such a special day and a special occasion. Even people who usually don't communicate with me online wished me a happy birthday. It is absolutely sweet knowing such people care so much. And once again- people DO care.

If you are reading this and have your own birthday you are celebrating, let me say...

Happy Birthday

People DO Care

John B. Marine | November 25, 2017 | | | | Be the first to comment!
People DO care. While it may seem like people are so hateful or want nothing to do with helping others, you're wrong. People DO care about helping others. You see so often despicable crimes, hurtful Internet memes, bullying, mass killings, terrorism, and more. All of which make you think humanity is imploding and society is destroying itself. Or at least, society internally bleeding. When you see people helping others or offering assistance outside of stories of hate and crimes covered, and when you think people don't care; you eventually realize...

People DO care.

Let me share some of my own personal insight to show that people do care.

People DO Care - Personal Insight.

I had more posts in mind when I finally created the "John's Life Space" blog. November 2017 hasn't been a good month for me. My grandmother died, and I had to have a scrotal abscess removed and treat infections. I expressed a number of my poor moments on social media. I mentioned to my Facebook friends and family regarding a lot of my rough moments. Usually, I would get a lot of attention on Facebook when it is my birthday or maybe the anniversaries of my High School graduation or the anniversary of my Associate's in the Arts. I was overwhelmed the amount of support on Facebook for my posts regarding my late grandmother and for my 13 days in the hospital. I normally don't get as much attention for even when my latest blog posts are being fed online. I received at least 20 comments on my Facebook profile with individuals offering their love and support. I didn't ask people to feel sorry for me or want people to post something to me. However, through the kindness of others and for how much I am appreciated by others, I have received so many genuine comments. Things like this help remind me (not that I need to be reminded) that there are good people in the world and that people do care. Even people who normally don't communicate with me on Facebook or respond to my posts even came out to offer support. People- you have no idea how special this makes me feel.

People DO Care - Times of Need.

There is a time really when people do care for others. We had Hurricane Harvey impact the Texas coastline and in Houston. While the hurricane impacted mostly south central Texas in cities like Corpus Christi and San Antonio, Houston got a lot of the "dirty" side of Hurricane Harvey. This is a city that had to rebuild substantially along with trying to improve relationships with neighbors. Did we have to try to help out others who may have lost everything or suffered damage? No. Because we are wanting to make life better for others, though, it at least is assuring and positive that we gain such support from other people. Having a sense of community and purpose help to make life easier and more enjoyable. While we can all live live alone, we don't HAVE to live life alone.

Why Are Most People So Uncaring (or Don't Care Enough)?

So how come we don't have as many people care for others or about others? Well, a lot of us are not as compassionate or as wanting to act outside of ourselves. We always tend to think we are threatened by others trying to take our spotlight or potentially ruin our success. Only legit excuse not to care is if you simply aren't qualified enough or are able enough to help someone or to care.

So remember folks- PEOPLE DO CARE! We should all be thankful to have such caring individuals for those of us who have people to look up to.

I will try to do all I can I help make this blog work. Maybe you can help. I will keep trying to add more content. I just hope you all can enjoy my efforts. Thank you for reading! Take care and be well.
