Suspicious Profiles

John B. Marine | June 27, 2023 | | Be the first to comment!
"(Name) has sent you a new friend request."

"(Name) followed you."

It is always great to meet new people on social media. Well, most of the time. Someone may seem completely innocent until this suspected "friend" may troll you or link you to something shady. Someone who may seem completely innocent may simply be a bunch of sexy pictures that probably isn't even that exact person. If you are trying to meet new people or gain new fans/followers, you have to be careful who you encounter. So this blog post discusses one of the pitfalls of social media- dealing with spam profiles. Let's get into it!

BEFORE I BEGIN...

Some of what I am about to discuss pertains to personal experiences of mine and intimate thoughts regarding meeting such suspicious profiles. While I may not cite specific individuals, I will make mention to certain individuals I've encountered.

Suspicious Profiles

I created this blog post almost as a chance to vent from a rash of fake profiles I have dealt with for months on end.

Social media is all about connecting with individuals close and far through cyberspace. While I have had the pleasure of meeting many people the world over through social media, I also had to deal with my fair share of fake profiles and spammers. It can be tough to fully trust some people sometimes. You may be fortunate enough to meet some complete stranger who actually does enjoy your work and does not just follow your profile(s) for the sake of following your profile(s). If that describes you, be happy! On the other hand, you may encounter someone who does mostly want to latch onto you and innundate you with spam or provide a number of shady links. If this describes you, be concerned.

A lot of social media allows you to control who you meet and who you can connect to. You do not have to accept just anyone if that is what is happening with you online. I will be discussing a few matters on certain social media platforms now. I will not mention every one, but I will make mention to some of the more popular ones.

Suspicious Profiles: Facebook.

Facebook has risen to become the biggest social media giant online. Previously, it was Myspace who was king. You now can access Myspace... through your Facebook account! Facebook has mostly been different in being more personal whom you meet and whom you connect with. While I do like to meet old friends on Facebook, some either don't remember me too well or want nothing to do with me anymore. It is a sad thing to admit, but it happens. I do feel that some people I thought would be lifelong friends and supporters ultimately want nothing to do with me anymore for whatever reason. I also may not feel I am truly a friend of someone. In some of these cases, I feel Facebook has rather DESTROYED some of my friendships rather than maintain them.

On the front of managing a Facebook Fan Page (here is mine: John Marine and JohnMarineDesigns), I am aware I may not have as much fan support as I would like. One thing I always like to say, though, is that I would rather have 50 loyal Facebook fans than 500 fake Facebook fans. I believe in being real and connecting with those who actually care. That even comes down to my fans of my Facebook fan page. I don't ever try to buy success or buy popularity.

Facebook can be a breeding ground for scammers. In my experiences, I may receive replies to Fan Pages along the lines of simply "hello" to "you seem like a great person, can you please request me?". This all sounds good on the surface. Everyone who I get requests from are those who I actually check to be genuine. A lot of the profiles I check mostly have maybe one or two pictures of normal to suspicious nature followed by maybe some quirky quote. Some profiles mostly are living advertisements to some suspicious adult-only website or some other kind of shady website. I make attempts to try to connect with most of my social media friends and family on a regular basis.

The reality of some of these people I have encountered on Facebook wait for a certain opportunity to connect with you and then hit you with shady material. Like, some people will pick a moment to connect with you and then make you fall for whatever scheme they have set up. One person I encountered basically feigned having some real ailment and tried to link me to some shady website. I IMMEDIATELY blocked (and maybe reported) this person. One other person who I thought was genuine years ago mostly wanted me to Become a Fan of (nowadays "Like") certain fan pages of suspicious pages. I felt this other person was suspicious, and I ultimately decided to drop this other person from my friends list. There were a few people who I added because I thought they were genuine... until I saw they had a bunch of profile pictures that are NOT of that person. For example, someone pretending to be someone else with genuine pictures, but then have a bunch of fake pictures for filler. As with other phonies, I blocked that profile and unfriended.

---Dealing with Suspicious Facebook Profiles---
What I ultimately did was limit any further friend requests to those I am already friends with. This is a measure that is good for cutting down on suspicious profiles on Facebook. It means only friends of friends can request you to be friends of yours. It does not guarantee friends of friends will all be genuine, but at least you will no longer get the random friend request of some suspicious individual. If you simply do not want to meet anyone new on Facebook, simply disallow any and all future friend requests.

I take an extra measure by looking at profiles that Follow my main profile. If I see a certain individual is Following my feed but not friends with me, I check to make sure a certain profile isn't suspicious in any such way. Someone who doesn't seem genuine a person I block- even if I don't have that person as a friend. You can allow or disallow people to follow your Facebook feed. Such people may not be your Facebook friends if they just Follow you, but at least you won't have to worry about getting scammed at some random moment from someone who you feel is genuine when you encountered that person on Facebook.

What about those Fan Pages where I get random people pretending to love my commentary? I report Spam. Afterwards, I have my tag removed from those comments, block that individual, and then hide any other comments from that person. You have to disallow suspicious material as best as you can.

Suspicious Profiles: Twitter.

Twitter can be a hot mess. It can sometimes be the most negative and toxic social media platforms online; and if you're not careful, you can be drawn into this downward spiral of a social media platform. It has been a place where I have encountered the most traffic from negative-minded individuals and also being followed by shady individuals. It also is a platform where people share news of people dying that haven't officially died (i.e., "RIP (somebody who hasn't actually died). It can be brutal on Twitter.

People can say whatever they want about Twitter of late being bought by a certain very rich person, but my real complaint has been in trying to defeat suspicious profiles. What am I talking about? I am talking about when you get mostly spam follows from what appears to be sexy women. They'll either link to their Only Fans (or some other adult website) or have absolutely nothing on their page but a lot of Followers and some picture.

---Dealing with Suspicious Twitter Profiles---
It used to be that you could report any sort of spam profile. Now, reporting is only done with more serious violations or conditions on the service. So all you can do with suspicious profiles is block them. It is a solution, but not a permanent solution. That (sadly) means you will have to continually block any and every suspicious Twitter profile so that person can keep making spam profiles and constantly annoying you.

Someone who may be friends with you may have their accounts hacked and deliver some spam E-Mails or spam messages. If someone you Follow has been hacked, don't fall for their hacked messages. It may also help to delete certain message discussions from someone hacked.

Suspicious Profiles: Instagram.

I surely have no regrets leaving Instagram. I had one too many bad experiences to where I felt the best thing I could do is leave. Sure, I lost my biggest outlet of sharing pictures, but at least I don't have to deal with some of the toxicity of comments as well as times where I got locked out of my account there. I thought about returning to Instagram as a business profile, but I still am away from Instagram and proud of it. Never again.

---Dealing with Suspicious Instagram Profiles---
What if you are dealing with supicious profiles on Instagram? Simply block whomever you find suspicious. Report anyone who is harassing you.

Suspicous Profiles: YouTube.

YouTube is the premier medium for sharing videos. In the past, I have had my fair share of haters and trolls on YouTube. Most of the spam and hate have been cleaned up.

---Dealing with Suspicious YouTube Profiles---
Should you see suspicious channels, block or report them. If you get certain suspicious channels in your Recommended videos, click on the three dots and select "Don't Recommend Channel."

Suspicious Profiles: TikTok.

I personally can not tolerate TikTok. However, I am on there to view various TikToks. A lot of people do find a good laugh out of short videos complimented with either lip syncing or some dancing or acting. Spam profiles may follow your work either sending you spam TikToks or are profiles laden with spam content.

---Dealing with Suspicious TikTok Profiles---
Report any suspicious profiles offering spam TikToks. Block any suspicious profiles as well.

Suspicious Profiles: Certain Services.

Examples of this section relate to certain services that are not social media platforms but certain services. Examples of this include: blog comments, media services, online marketplaces, etc. You may, for example, pick up a spam comment in your blog from a spam profile. You may get some Follow from a suspicious follower on a media-sharing website claiming to be a legitimate person who could try to promote your music.

---Dealing with Suspicious Non-Social Media Profiles---
Whatever resources there are to block and/or report suspicious individuals, use those resources to help protect yourself and your work. If there are individuals wanting to work with you to promote your content, be careful who you trust. Someone who may be genuine may be trying to cash in on your success or scam you. So make sure you can trust some people who come around to interact with your work.

A few final thoughts are coming up.

Suspicious Profiles: Final Thoughts

Social media can be a great way to meet new people and connect with those you know. Social media also, however, be an exercise in patience dealing with suspicious profiles. The best thing you can do is shun off people online who are suspicious in nature. Any combination of blocking and/or reporting fake profiles will go a long way in making the social media experience a happy one for you and others.

Social media may have a bunch of fake profiles, but there are actual genuine people who are worth connecting with. Do not entirely give up on meeting others and connecting with others if it is a goal of yours. You can still promote your work to others while also try to meet new people. Just make sure you know who are dealing with and always be vigilant.

I hope all of you on social media will be able to deal with these people as best as possible online. Transgender Acceptance and Inclusion

John B. Marine | March 07, 2023 | | | | | | Be the first to comment!
Recent controversy by a major candy maker has inspired me to discuss transgender acceptance and inclusion. As the LGBT community is being better accepted, transgender acceptance and inclusion is still a major hurdle. This blog discussion of transgender acceptance and inclusion may not solve any transgender issues, but it will be a chance to discuss transgenders being better accepted and included in a number of arenas and outlets.

Transgender Acceptance and Inclusion

Let me start this post by sharing the inspiration for this topic.

Hershey's Chocolate [of Canada] generated controversy recently when promoting their "HerSHE" candy. The controversy involves a transgender woman being among real females. In today's changing culture, a lot of people think this is an excellent move for a transgender woman to be regarded and respected as a woman. The anti-transgender crowd, however, thought much differently. Some even used the saying, "women are born not worn." This 2023 Hershey's HerSHE campaign fueled the desire of me to discuss transgender acceptance and inclusion.

In Case You're Interested...

Check out this brief piece that helped spark my discussion on transgender acceptance and inclusion:

^ "Hershey's Women's Day campaign featuring trans activist sparks backlash"

In addition to this bit of controversy, a number of different state governments in the United States are ruling things like drag queen shows as punishable crimes. There is still a great deal of transphobia ranging from violence and discrimination against transgenders. A number of transgenders have lost their lives due to senseless violence.

The LGBT community is still very much trying to get more support and bearings, but it is still an uphill struggle to be accepted and included. Some people think transgenders are more along the lines of those who *choose* to be a gender other than their birth gender. For example, it is like (in the minds of a transphobe) a male chooses for a day to be a female rather than accept that a male at birth identifies as and acts as a female. I even remember when a female-to-male transgender became pregnant. Regardless of the gender preference of an individual, it is best to respect and acknowledge those preferences along with preferred pronouns. If a male prefers any pronouns, respect that. If a female prefers "he/him/they," respect those pronouns and use them.

Until transgenders are better accepted by the general public, we have to strive towards helping them get the respect and attention they aspire. How do we work towards transgenders being better accepted and included? I'll begin by discussing acceptance. Next section, please.

Transgender Acceptance

A lot of people mostly think of transgender types either as crossdressing or something comical. As if most people believe some transgender types really enjoy *playing* as their opposite gender. LGBT+ as it stands is already an exercise in trying to be accepted. Being transgender is even more a difficult deal to try to be accepted. Transgenders simply want to be accepted and acknowledged for their gender preference(s). Perhaps the bigger issue would involve those who legally and medically have proper transgender transition going. Even those who still have their preferences towards gender should be respected for their choices.

A person's gender preference is as important and as intimate as a person's name. As much as someone hates being called out of their name, a person hates to be misgendered. Even if an M2F transgender specifically prefers being referred to as a she/her, she hates being referred to as a he/him. What could be a less stressing circumstance is if the transgender person prefers any or all pronouns.

I do think as the LGBT community is becoming better accepted, there eventually will be fewer transphobic types. You can't eliminate transphobia, but it can surely be curbed. The problem is that not many people are willing to accept certain transgenders.

Transgender Acceptance: Transgender Youth.

My biggest fear among transgenders is with transgender youth. One of the brightest beacons and hopes for the transgender community is Jazz Jennings. Having such a supportive family and actually going through with all the different nuances of transitioning properly has been handled nicely by Jazz and her family. Even if you never seen "I Am Jazz," just know Jazz was a little boy who always known she was a girl in a boy's body. The extensive experiences by Jazz has helped her to become the beautiful and strong woman she is today.

Most transgender youth, however, do not have such support that Jazz Jennings got. Some siblings actually get kicked out of their houses by their parents or relatives for being any denomination of LGBT, let alone transgender. I remembered the first transgender I've ever known how she hated to be kicked out of her house by her grandmother just because she's transgender. This was in my college days, but being transgender in grade school can be damaging. Imagine being 17 or younger and out of a house because of being transgender.

Young transgenders could be faced with such a tough life ahead, so it is best to work with them as well as offer hope and protection to them. It is best to give them hope rather than let them feel worthless. If you are a parents of a transgender (or even a genderqueer) individual at 17 or younger, try to work with them to ensure they will be okay for years to come. Among peers, respect a transgender and whatever pronouns and gender identity a young transgender may prefer.

This is all a tough subject. Now coming up, I discuss transgender inclusion.

Transgender Inclusion

As someone who follows fashion, the feeling of inclusion is what a lot of people want to have. Fashion designers have been more open to designing clothes for many more figures and even for the LGBT community. Hershey's offering inclusion for transwomen as part of the "HerSHE" campaign is commendable. It is commendable even if the anti-transgender crowd think Hershey's should be ashamed for including a transwoman to be among cisgender women. Playboy Magazine, known for their sultry models, even showcased a transgender model in the magazine's long history. There is certainly inclusion among certain entities to include transgenders.

Transgenders do not believe they are their birth gender. Some people experience gender dysphoria, the feeling of being dissatisfied with their birth gender or preferred gender. Some people wanting to transition have hated their lives living as their birth gender and want to start anew as another gender. A transgender can be very young or even be north of age 50. Regardless- all transgenders want to be included and respected.

I think a lot of people tend to look at transgenders as monsters. Fact is- transgenders are human beings as any other human. Unless guilty of committing legitimate crimes, they should be included among the rest of the world. The trouble to all of this is that transgenders have a tough time being included. Some just fail to see the person and only latch onto gender. Until more people are accepted for their personality and their abilities, this will continue to be an issue.

Allow me to close out this one with some final thoughts.

Transgender Acceptance and Inclusion: Final Thoughts

Transgender acceptance and inclusion can be tough to come by. Though in today's culture, it is becoming better accepted in a number of countries. A changing culture means that current culture has to keep up with new changes. Those changes include better accepting the LGBT community, including transgenders.

Acceptance for the transgender community begins with giving hope, protection, and respect to transgenders. Transgenders should be able to be accepted into the workforce and stay in families. Acceptance among transgenders also mean respecting the gender(s) and pronoun(s) they prefer. The acceptance process can be tougher for transgender youth, as the stakes can be higher for them. Parents who refuse to be as supportive to young transgenders can run the risk of severing the bonds of parent-sibling for the rest of a young transgender's life. So special care is needed to prevent the chances of some serious distrust.

Transgender inclusion is as big an issue as acceptance. It helps knowing a transgender can be accepted in a given space and not be subject to any kind of discrimination. If my earlier examples of inclusion were of any indication, I am sure more companies and environments will be more inclusive and respectful of transgenders.

I do feel LGBT types will be better accepted, at least here in the United States of America. If we can get over the mindset that transgenders are monsters or diseased, we can better accept them as people and with the proper pronouns they prefer. It took ages for racial injustice to be curbed. We can do the same for the LGBT community, including transgenders. Unless a transgender is guilty of legitimate crimes or commits crimes, all transgenders should be respected equally as non-transgender individuals.

Asking for a Friend

John B. Marine | March 02, 2023 | | | | Be the first to comment!
What has become the latest trendy phrase is "asking for a friend." The concept works like this- rather than the person in question ask for advice, his/her/their friend asks for them. Can another person be trusting enough to legitimately ask a question to someone else and get proper advice?

I actually think this is a legitimate concept if one actually is too afraid to ask on one's own. However, I do not think one person should feel overly embarrassed. If someone wanted to visit my blog(s) for advice on something, it's here for you- no need to ask, not really any shame if you have such concerns.

Asking for a Friend: Sample Scenario.

Okay- let us set up a scenario. Let's say a straight male has a romantic attraction to another male or a transgender woman, and he has questions regarding intimacy. That male would probably want to find out on his own answers to his questions, but he would feel embarrassed to ask on his own. So someone would tell a friend to get some answers speaking on his behalf. I think someone would have to be bold enough and trusting enough to help get answers to such questions.

Asking for a Friend: No "Friend?"

What if the "asking for a friend" was simply one person having an embarrasing question and not really asking on behalf of any person? This situation would be the kind of situation where someone can absolutely question the validity of asking others for advice. In a situation like this, the person would mostly pretend to ask for advice but is really lying about trying to ask a question on a friend's behalf when there is no one he/she/they asks for. Such people protect one's own character by pretending to ask on someone else's behalf when they are the ones wanting certain advice on something.

When Asking for a Friend Can Work.

The only real situation where I can see where asking for a friend works is if someone asks a friend about something to someone who may be tough to communicate with. For example, someone may want some advice from someone who may be tough to talk with. This is the only real situation where I can see asking for a friend actually working.

Final Thoughts on Asking For a Friend.

Salute to anyone who is willing to ask questions about things to other people on their behalf. I know it can be tough trying to ask on your own, but there is more credibility and honesty when you ask questions yourself or looking for answers on your own. It is okay to ask about embarrassing things to others. Especially if you have trust issues, it is best to ask about things on your own than rely on someone else to ask on your behalf. Maybe if someone is tough to talk with about things, then it may be okay to ask for someone to try to talk with such individuals. Other than that, try to gather the courage to ask about things yourself. Preserve your honesty and character by asking questions yourself that may embarrass or concern you rather than rely on friends.

At least... these are my thoughts regarding the whole "asking for a friend" thing. You are free to react any way you see fit. Or let me ask...

How do you feel about "asking for a friend" about certain things?

Anhedonia

John B. Marine | January 26, 2023 | | | | Be the first to comment!
Anhedonia is defined as the lack of experiencing pleasure, and it is often a symptom of major depressive disorder. Imagine partaking in your favorite activities- only to not enjoy them. That is what happens when anhedonia takes over your mind. You don't get to enjoy certain pleasures that give you pleasure.

A lot of us partake in activities and such to relax our minds. When you have anhedonia, however, doing what you love does not give you an sort of satisfaction or happiness. Depression limits your ability to enjoy life or even enjoy your favorite activities. Anhedonia makes you even more incapable of feeling pleasure. Depression and anhedonia, however, are not entirely the same thing. One needs not be depressed to experience anhedonia.

In addition to anhedonia, there are also conditions known as social anhedonia and physical anhedonia. Social anhedonia is an inability to feel pleasure through being with others. Physical anhedonia involves a lack of pleasure from physical or certain emotional experiences. Imagine not being able to experience joy being around friends/family or in actions such as shaking hands, hugging, or even kissing. Anhedonia is a bane to various social interactions.

If you experience anhedonia of any kind, a lot of what makes life fun and enjoyable does not seem to matter. You can not enjoy the pleasures of life as you normally would if you didn't have anhedonia. This is a condition that makes each day feel lifeless and meaningless. If you feel you have anhedonia, the best thing you can do is consult with your healthcare provider or seek help from a psychotherapist. It is not easy to root out the main cause of what may cause anhedonia in most individuals. Every case of anhedonia may be different from one another, so make sure to seek some professional help if you are in this situation.

Swearing

John B. Marine | September 07, 2022 | | | | Be the first to comment!
WARNING: The following topic may not be suitable for all audiences. Due to the subject matter of this topic, viewer discretion is advised. Parents of younger children will need to restrict or limit younger viewers from viewing this material. Otherwise, you are reading this material at your own risk.

As someone who watches a lot of online videos and live streams, I am used to the occasional swearing people make. While I don't make a big deal about swearing, I do often wonder if people feel turned off by such swearing. So for this blog post, I want to discuss swearing. Is it okay to swear? Is there a time and place for swearing? I will share my thoughts through the course of this blog post.

BEFORE I BEGIN...

(1) This blog post is not intended to show my thoughts on people who swear either rarely or often. I am just here to discuss swearing on a journalistic, factual perspective. I am also not here to shame anyone who constantly swears.

(2) Because this is a rather sensitive topic, you are reading about this matter at your own risk. So be ready for some bad language expressed in this post.

Swearing

When I was growing up, saying a *bad word* would get me spanked by my parents. Back in school, students would be shocked if someone out loud bursts a swear word. Saying bad words back when I was growing up in elementary school would get you into some trouble for being a "potty mouth." A lot of video games and computer games today have a handful of bad language that may be used. Of course, there are a lot of songs that have their fair share of foul language. Take it from me- someone who grew up listening to hip-hop. I heard songs and skits where "motherfucker" is said at least five times in one song or skit. Television and movies also have their handful of mild to strong language. To some people, swearing is just words and not meant to hurt anyone. However, such language isn't tolerated by some people and in some audiences. While you can not regulate swearing entirely, there are cases where a slip of the tongue can result in hearing a bad language word unintentionally or accidentally.

While the need to swear is not necessarily a bad thing, where and when you do so matters. Swearing is mostly okay around friends casually communicating. If around children or in some kind of religious setting, swearing is frowned upon. It can be very easy to poison peoples' minds and ears with a well-timed swear session.

Levels of Swearing.

Swearing can come in different levels. To prevent saying certain powerful swear words, some will use other terms to prevent saying *those words." We all are used to a lot of them. For instance, we will use words like "darn" or "dang" to avoid saying "damn." Recent times have seen "bad ass" or "badass" being used a lot. Some people even use "AF" or "A.F." to avoid saying "_____ as fuck." Such as in the case of "feminist AF." Hearing the occasional "F-bomb" happens.

Here are examples of certain swear words that showcase the extent of what swearing can be like:

* MILD SWEARING: damn (except for dams or "Van Dam"), hell, ass (when used offensively), piss
* MODERATE SWEARING: bitch (when used offensively), bastard (when used offensively), ho/hoe/whore (when used offensively)
* STRONG SWEARING: fuck or motherfucker/motherfucking, shit, dick (when used offensively or sexually), pussy (when used offensively or sexually), (almost any derogatory term or expression)

Hearing or seeing such words can bring others to cringe a bit.

More Examples of Swearing.

One time, I saw a boy maybe between the ages of 5-12 wear an athletic T-shirt that said "All Damn Day." There would be no way I would allow my children (if I had any) that young to wear a shirt like that. I even saw someone's car have a sticker on it saying "twins up in this bitch." This is rather unnecessary swearing there, despite the comedic value. One fashion blogger I follow rarely swore, until she started swearing a bit more in her blog posts to vent anger.

When I think of some people who change up their lives as they get older, one such entity is one of my favorite recording artists- Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift started out as a country cutie circa 2008. Rarely did she drop any bad language. Later in her career going from country pop to traditional pop, Taylor would have some songs with a little mild language. Then into her 30s, she began to swear more frequently and often in her songs. Thankfully, Taylor doesn't immaturely or casually swears to others. So someone can go from purely innocent to vastly offensive language-wise throughout one's life.

Swearing can also be a factor in love and relationships. Some may find it discerning when one's partner constantly swears. It may be a turn-off to some people to have a partner who swears often.

Moderators on live streams or online channels often filter out words that seem offensive. Some words get Auto-Modded when they are not meant to be used in a certain sense. So you have to be careful in some chat settings that you don't say anything that can draw the attention of moderators or have some censorship.

I often feel some people liberally swear just to show their community is not G-rated or for a general audience. Someone may also implement some kind of swearing or sexual innuendo to market to a more mature audience. Sometimes, these can be unnecessary and unintentional implementations of mature content. For a lot of Twitch channels and YouTube live streamers, the usual assumption is that one is 13 years or older when viewing certain channels. Some even are 18+ channels or have mature streams. In these environments, swearing can become more frequent.

My Own Swearing Experiences and Thoughts.

I don't make a big deal about swearing because I'm used to it and don't mind it. Though sometimes, I do feel that swearing when you don't need to or don't have to can sometimes be an annoyance. I will only swear when I am completely angry or frustrated about something. For example, I'd swear to myself if my beloved sports team gets scored on. I would also swear if I am having a disgusting day where nothing seems to go right. However, I wouldn't go casually swearing when I am communicating with others on social media or making some videos. It was kind of the way I was raised.

On the same note, I don't refer to my own Black people as (the N-word) as a form of endearment in the sense of, "my (N-word)." I just don't casually curse or feel like I casually curse just to show my material is not meant for a general audience. I feel swearing can only draw some people away or make some people want to cover the ears of younger people. Swearing is only acceptable to me if warranted or for comedic purposes. Just doing it casually and when not needed just seems immature and can be a turn-off.

How about we go with some Final Thoughts on this matter? Next section coming up...

Swearing: Final Thoughts

Eveyone uses swear words for all kinds of situations and for all kinds of purposes. Whether or not you approve or disapprove of this is not the point of this blog post. I simply wanted to discuss how and why we swear and use swear words. I am around lots of people who have no problem swearing up and down, sometimes unnecessarily. I am no hypocrite or anything in preferring people who casually swear more than those who only rarely or moderately swears. My blogs are fairly general audience, but even I had to break a few rules to discuss this topic to you all.

If you swear often, that is fine. If you rarely swear, that is also fine. Swearing should mostly be like consuming alcohol or using tobacco- best in moderation. However, life your life the way you choose to live life. If people disapprove, let them be. Just do you.

Turned Down on Social Media

John B. Marine | July 20, 2021 | | Be the first to comment!
A lot of us look to social media to connect with others. However, what happens when you disconnect from social media? Some say the best social media is connecting with others in person. That is not entirely true if friends of yours you know personally or old friends of yours from the past are your only connection to them. These are times where you get turned down by social media for whatever reason(s). That is what I am here to discuss in this blog post.

Turned Down on Social Media

Earlier in 2021, I retired from Instagram. Part of this meant my primary hub for image sharing was gone. It also meant people I known only through Instagram may be gone forever. An old friend of mine from High School and college recently dropped me as a friend. Because of my horrid past, I felt like I probably instigated getting dropped by someone. Some, though, simply just move on without you. People you thought were friends of yours and don't do or say anything as to why you get dropped often can depress us. Let's face it- not everyone will be your "BFF" (best friend forever). Even people you thought were loyal friends may ultimately turn on you on a moment's notice.

I felt connecting on social media will help me to try to re-discover old friends of mine from the past. I never had any kind of prom or yearbook to remember old faces. So I am entirely going on memory. Maybe some people will remember me; maybe some others will not. All I do know is that even when people ultimately decide to not want anything to do with me anymore, I still regard them as great people unless I was totally done wrong by them.

Who Turns Down Who?

Anyone from family members, friends, and even your lovers can turn you down for whatever reason(s). Some may not tell you up front. Some others probably feel you shouldn't at all be connected to someone within a certain profile. This means you have to contend with others who have no real desire to add you to their social media. The common mindset is that friends go everywhere and connect in every way. That even includes social media. However, social media can be a different deal altogether as to who is in your circle and who isn't. With this said, anyone can turn down anyone on social media- even including personal relations.

What If You Get Rejected on Social Media?

There are a lot of things you can consider if you get turned down by someone on social media:

• Try to Reconnect
One old college friend of mine re-admitted me when I tried to reconnect with that person. This person would later say I wasn't at all dropped. It was a sign of relief.

• Wonder if You or That Person Did Something to Get Dropped
You probably did something that caused one of your social media friends to want to drop you. That person may also simply do something to where he/she has nothing to do with you any longer. If you can connect and confess, you may be able to ask for forgiveness. Unless the offense was for damages to life and/or property, your chances of reconciliation are vastly low. You may also try to make sure not to commit the same mistake(s) again between you two.

There is one more possibility that is tough to admit and tough to do, but it's true...

• Simply Move On...
You may simply have to move on. It's sad you lost someone you thought you trusted and was loyal, but you may simply have to try to make new bonds with new people. People from your past are purely that- your past. Look to the future. Seek new memories and find new happiness with new people. That's the sad reality I've had to face knowing I've touched past personalities in my life in a happy way then. Just sad that they no longer matter to me, and that they moved on without me. When one door closes, another one opens.

It may not be your fault entirely that you get dropped on social media. Whatever the case, maintaining your happiness and well-being are important in times like these.

Turned Down on Social Media: Final Thoughts

Social media has its place in meeting people and maintaining relationships with others. When one suffers a disconnect, it can range from any number of situations and be because of any number of causes. If you feel left out by someone you thought was a true friend, you begin to feel depressed knowing you no longer matter in someone's life. You can try anything like trying to reconnect with someone you previously known or try to ask for forgiveness if you felt like you hurt someone. What is also a sad reality to face... is that you may have to simply move on. Try to find happiness and happy memories with newer people or different people. Those from your past will mostly remain that- a part of your past. Look to the future. Hopefully... a brighter future.

That concludes this blog post about being rejected on social media. Let me know what you think if you want to discuss this topic:

How do you get over being rejected by someone on social media, especially those who you thought were loyal and respectful to you?

Belong

John B. Marine | May 02, 2021 | | | Be the first to comment!
Being part of a community and being respected among a general audience makes us feel better inside. This ability to belong makes us all feel better inside. However, what happens when wanting to belong doesn't work? Depending on how people take it, not being able to belong in any circle leads to loneliness or feeling as if you are not fit for this world. Is it something you need to do to better fit in with others? Do you simply need to be around better people? No matter what the case, feeling as if you belong is a warming feeling. That is what I hope to discuss in this blog post.

Before I begin, I can't believe I haven't updated this blog since January 2021 until this post. You all deserve more of my posts and more of my own posts regarding various aspects of life. So enjoy this latest post I have for you all!

Belong

The ability to belong among others can be helpful in establishing community or feeling loved. When you belong with others, there is unity and happiness. That unity and happiness goes away when one feels left out or not cared enough. Granted most people try not to be the center of attention, most others do not want to always steal the spotlight or seem more important than others. If some people do feel left out and try to get along with others, then some people may try to belong with others through almost any means- even to the point of doing something damaging or troublesome.

I have been a part of multiple online forums as well as streaming chats where I felt either connected or disconnected. I try to get involved with as many different communities as possible. I may even try to learn the lingo and language of a community to better fit in. I will even vastly support the communities I try to be a part of. However, if I feel I am not as connected anymore or if I seem no longer loved or needed, I'll leave. I chose to be part of a community, and I also have the power to leave a community and no longer support it if I feel unwanted or not needed. The pain of leaving such communities often gets to me at times. If I feel I am no longer wanted or no longer feel connected, I may feel it is the right call to leave for (sometimes) forever. There is yet for me to feel like wanting to rejoin a community or service I left for whatever reason(s).

Through a good bit of 2021, I found myself Unfollowing various Twitch channels I either felt like I didn't belong anymore, or that I didn't feel I could go any further supporting and being a part of. This leads to me feeling more lonely at times than previously. Depending on how shunned I feel, I may even go as far as blocking certain channels just to get certain bad memories out of my mind. There were also some channels where I just seemed to no longer visit regularly. This is all on me for not visiting as often as I could. Even still, I didn't want to feel like I am only adding to Follower count without actually visiting channels when I can.

A Weakness Admitted.

If there is one thing I feel I am weak at, it is teamwork and trying to establish an audience. I feel as if my own thoughts and my own suggestions do not matter much. This resulted in some of my college efforts with team assignments coming up short. When it comes to chatting online, I feel I am not as regarded or loved much. So while some people even go as far as spamming words to say annoying text-to-speech messages and talking about certain toilet humor, I often feel left out. This discrepancy leads to me not being able to belong in certain spaces.

Let's talk more about belonging with others in various aspects.

Belonging: Different Applications

To understand belonging better, let me describe various situations.

Belonging: In Families.

Your family should be the best friends you'll ever have and those who understand you best. Some people, though, feel disconnected from their family for whatever reason. So when you feel like you don't belong in your own family, you become very left out. Some family members who feel like they don't belong feel as if they are disregarded or not as loved as they could be.

Some family members may also have certain stepparents whose philosophies and personalities apart from what you believe in. This can also contribute to not feeling like you belong.

Belonging: Among Friends.

Meeting new people and associating yourself with circles of friends make us all connected and loved. But, what happens when you feel like you are no longer loved or needed? You may face a time where those you thought you were cool with ultimately either turn their back(s) on you or make you feel you either no longer matter or feel replaced.

Belonging: Your Love Life.

When a bond is just you and someone you love, not feeling you belong is depressing, as you have only one person who you truly care about. That same person, though, could make you feel you don't belong or feel supported any longer. These can lead to a number of issues. The least of which include isolation, depression, and in the worst cases- violence and abuse.

Belonging: Communities.

You likely chose to join a certain community. When you feel like you do not belong in a certain community, that is where you feel left out and want to go elsewhere. It is the feeling of trying to stand out in a crowd. A lot of times it works; most other times, not so much. What you want to avoid is feeling as if you need to do something dramatic or hurtful to try to gain attention. Then, you run the risk of being even less like you belong and potentially get into trouble. There were message boards and Twitch channels where I haven't felt welcomed or loved anymore. I even tried to refrain from chatting often times because I know I will probably not be heard, not be cared about, and feel like I am only getting in the way of other people enjoying certain content. The last thing I want to do is feel like I am not contributing in any positive sense in any community I am a part of or try to get involved with.

Wanting to belong can take on a number of different instances. How we handle these emotions make us either happy or sad depending on the situation.

Belong: Final Thoughts

We all deserve to belong among any circle of friends we wish to be associated with. We also deserve to feel like we belong among others. Establishing community and being cared for is what many of us long for. However, belonging and wanting to belong with others can be a great challenge. We need certain people who make us feel welcome. You may need to adjust your personality and style to fit in better; but otherwise, it helps to try to belong with others. If you feel you belong but the ones you belong with don't connect with you, either those persons have to adjust their actions, or you can always leave. Life is best enjoyed when everyone can be around others who make us feel whole, complete, respected, and most of all... belong.

That concludes this blog post. Hopefully I will create more blog posts to keep this blog going. Special thanks to everyone who offered resources to my "Helpful Resources" page. Suicide

John B. Marine | August 11, 2020 | | | Be the first to comment!
In 2018, we lost celebrities like Verne Troyer, Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain, and Avicii to suicide. Suicide is defined as the taking of your own life. Almost basically saying you're done with life and choose to end your life. There is no coming back when you try to take your own life. When you, as a solo entity, are dead; you're dead... for good. Scary thing is that no one may even know you have taken your own life unless a loved one or somebody else reports someone has committed suicide.

This blog post is a discussion of suicide. This is actually a post I had planned long ago but never got to complete until now.

Before I Begin...

Suicide is a very serious matter. If you or someone you know is in crisis involving suicide, get professional help IMMEDIATELY. Consult with your healthcare provider or seek professional help.

On a different note, this is my first blog post ever since Blogger/Blogspot updated its interface. I am still committed, though, to providing quality blogging content for all of you regardless. Just trying to get used to some of the new changes.

Suicide

For all intents and purposes, suicide is basically giving up on life. It is someone believing life is no longer worth living and that there seems to be no reason to want to live anymore. This feeling suggests one serves no further purpose in life and society. Because of this, a person who is suicidal feels he/she can no longer become a functional member of society.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. The AFSP also reported that in 2018, there were 1.4M suicide attempts, and 48,344 of the 1.4M attempts were successful suicides. Suicide rates in 2018 were highest among middle-aged white men. Males have committed suicide 3.56 times more than females. Suicide rates in America have steadily increased between 2009 and 2018, going from 11.75% in 2009 to 14.2% in 2018. If you want to read more statistics on suicide in 2018 in the United States, you may view this: Suicide Statistics | AFSP.

A person should honestly never think this way or feel his/her value has been totally diminished. However, there are those people who feel they can no longer contribute or become so deep in pain that they feel living only prolongs one's pain. Everyone in life has the opportunity to make as much of one's own life and contribute to making the world a better place. Those who are suicidal, though, feel their abilities are not great enough to be loved and respected.

The aftermath of suicide can be devastating. The taking of one's own life will have people wondering how exactly someone could hate himself/herself so much to the point of wanting to commit suicide. There was one girl in one of my classes back in High School who killed herself. The school counselors were in our class offering grief counseling afterwards. This is a matter that brings together everyone in a heart-wrenching way on such a somber note.

No matter how anyone views suicide, this is violence that is unwarranted and has no justification whatsoever.

Suicide Sources.

Suicide can stem from a number of different reasons. A lot of suicide cases relate to depression. Someone who is depressed often can not find any reason or motivation to be happy. So in these circumstances, someone overly depressed has no further hope and decides to kill himself/herself. Suicide is like an extreme case in which someone has a vision of the future and does not like what he/she sees. Some suicides can result from drug abuse (such as overdosing) or any other sort of substance abuse. Some suicides are even accidental or to no fault of one's own.

Suicide from Bullying or Certain Criticisms.

Some suicides can result either from bullying or from some sort of destructive criticism. In the case of bullying or cyberbullying, someone could be talked about in such a bad way that the person targeted could kill himself/herself because of such comments. Certain criticisms can also result in someone committing suicide. These are cases in which verbal abuse can rattle one's mind to be convinced to commit suicide. It all depends on how someone takes certain criticisms or words. This can be especially common among young individuals. Surely in a time of Internet memes and such, the pain from certain criticisms can be damaging and detrimental to one's health, especially one's mental health. Someone who feels he/she is incapable of being loved may feel he/she is no longer welcome in today's society, so that person may commit suicide feeling as if he/she is doing the world a favor.

Suicide From Current Issues.

Some people can not even bear current times, such as the COVID-19/Coronavirus pandemic of late. So some people overwhelmed with the state of affairs in today's world feel they can no longer live or provide for their families, so they commit suicide. It is possible certain living conditions and changes to what is considered normal can result in suicide.

Murder-Suicide.

Killing someone or something is a crime in its own right. Killing someone one something, followed by killing yourself afterwards is just as wrong. Someone who commits a murder-suicide knows what one did is wrong, so the person kills himself/herself to avoid having to face any serious consequences. These murder-suicide cases can range in intensity from simple crimes to mass terrorism. Either way, the results can be intensely massive both for those murdered to those who committed the crime.

As you can see, suicide comes in many different forms and executed for many different reasons. This section concludes a general look at suicide. Now comes a look at suicide prevention.

Suicide Prevention

When someone even has suicidal thoughts, it is very important to try to work with people to help prevent suicide. How does one prevent suicide, though? Here are a few things to consider...

Suicide Prevention: Helping Others.

The most important thing to remember is a suicidal person will not immediately have a change of heart. Getting a suicidal person to feel better will be a long task, so the first thing to do is to try to convince someone to not kill himself/herself. A suicidal person has to agree to disclose his/her issues. Be sure to listen and understand what that person is going through. Even if you are not the best equipped or able to help a person's issues, being able to listen and understand someone is the first step towards preventing suicide. If a suicidal person has hurt or injured himself/herself or is ill, get that person immediate medical help. Find the nearest clinic or emergency care unit to help that person recover quickly. It may also be possible someone may have to transferred to a nearby hospital. Whatever it takes to get someone feeling better, it is worth it.

Suicide Prevention: Helping Yourself.

What if you are suicidal and have no source to try to help you feel better? Suicide prevention is tougher when it is you who is suicidal and have no one you trust to help you feel better. Here you must rely on trying to recognize what exactly makes you happy. You must think about if it is really worth it to commit suicide. Usually, suicide is NEVER worth it. Even if you feel you serve no further purpose in society, at least think about all of the people whom love and care for you. Even people who choose not to socialize or have friends should have at least someone to look up to. If you feel you have no one to talk to, gather up the energy and resources to seek professional help. Seek a healthcare professional (preferably a psychologist or psychotherapist) either in your city or through telemedicine. You may need to take antidepressants to help get your mind right. Being alone and suicidal can be almost too easy in a deadly result. Considering everything to help you in preventing suicide is key. Once you're gone when no one is around to help you, you're gone. No one is going to be able to save you or help you once you commit suicide.

Post-Prevention Measures.

If someone is successfully able to defeat suicidal thoughts, the obvious next step is to recover. Recovery is a slow process, but a useful process after having had such suicidal thoughts. Somoeone who may have hurt or injured oneself has to now try to recover to get back to feeling normal and happy again. If one is successful at treating suicide, the next step is to try to get someone to feel happy and confident again after experiencing suicidal thoughts and actions.

Some final thoughts in regards to suicide and suicide prevention are coming up next.

Suicide: Final Thoughts

Suicide is a serious matter. It is an extreme form of depression to where someone feels he/she no longer serves any purpose in society and feel he/she can no longer contribute to society. It is a feeling of giving up on life and hope. Though suicide is serious, measures can be taken to help someone who may be in crisis. No one person would ever joke about wanting to end his/her own life. Suicide comes from a number of resources, and treating such manners is different for everyone. As long as there is patience practiced, it is possible to defeat any suicidal thoughts to return to living a better, healtier life. Medical assistance and professional health care may be required to help increase the ability to defeat suicide and suicidal thoughts. Whatever it takes, suicide must be defeated if one wants to enjoy living happily again.
