Saving Money and Major Purchases

John B. Marine | June 06, 2024 | | | Be the first to comment!
Things cost money. When things cost a lot of money, you want to save up finances. Major purchases are an exercise in saving finances. How you handle the saving process depends on being able to make major purchases. So for this blog post, I discuss making major purchases. Hopefully this will be a discussion to your liking if this topic interests you.

Making Major Purchases: At a Glance

When something you need or want costs a lot of money, you will need enough finances to make a purchase happen. You need enough credit to acquire something anyways. Some items require more money for which to acquire. There is no one specific way to save up enough finances to buy anything. What may work for one person may not work for another.

I always try to be transparent and real regarding topics I feature in my blogs, so let me share that I am as much into major purchases as you are. For me, I have been trying to save up money lately to get myself a modern gaming console. The original plan was to get a Nintendo Switch. That plan changed to getting a used PlayStation 4. Now, I have considered saving up to get a PlayStation 5 [Disc Version]. The plan I have currently means I have to consider saving up more money to get what I want.

I have made enough strides to save money for things. I remembered saving up money towards buying a computer, a Chromebook, an MP3 player, a PlayStation 3, and a few other things. I have done things like get PayPal money and even doing paid blog posts. I have done nearly anything to try to make and save money.

Inspiration/Motivation to Save Money.

Let me share some of my motivations and inspirations regarding saving money.

A TV program I used to watch years ago (around 2012) about saving money was called "Deals" on the Live Well Network (now known as LOCALish). The host of this former show, host, Katishia Cosley, would offer up money-saving advice ranging from spending less on items to even making your own items to save money. Watching this show around 2012 or so was helpful in knowing what is possible for stretching dollars. ABC 13 here in Houston also had a segment on their afternoon news called just that- "Stretch Your Dollar" with former newscaster, Patricia Lopez. Nowadays with this topic, I watch "Sullivan's Smart Sense" with Heather Sullivan on FOX 26 here in Houston. Saving money can help towards making major purchases in case you are planning on making any major purchases. That is my own personal inspiration towards saving money and in making major purchases.

Now that I have discussed the individual nuances of saving money and my own situation, let's delve deeper into the matter of making major purchases and saving money.

Making Major Purchases

So you want to plan a big purchase some time soon or in the future? Good! Be mindful of a few things, though. Please consider the following...

Major Purchases: Needs and Wants.

If there is something you are looking to buy, is it a need or a want? When it comes to more expensive things, the importance of having it warrants saving up for them.

A need involves something necessary and essential to living. A major purchase as a need includes things like houses, rent, vehicles, some furniture, some electronics, certain services, enough for groceries, going to school/college/university, tuition, and things like that. Needs can also include saving for retirement, paying for insurance, disability benefits, credits for services, and more. Saving up for something essential is surely is serious regarding major purchases.

A want is something you'd like to have that is not essential towards living. These can be simple things like video game consoles, gaming computers, video games and computer games, some clothes, certain footwear, collectibles, and the like. Things non-essential to your living but like to have is a want. Starting a business can also be a want if you are looking for a long-team deal of staying financially stable or being able to provide for your family and others.

Depending on your situation, you will have to weigh your needs and wants. Some wants can be needs if something is very important to you. So even the most comical of things can be something you feel you must have. Maybe you do need something non-essential to help live better or open opportunities to new things. It all depends.

Considerations After Planning Making a Major Purchase.

What can be more important than a major purchase itself is in dealing with finances after the purchase. You may have bought something for about $340 USD, but have you thought about having money left over? I always consider the price of something, the sales tax for it, and then how much money I'd have left over. It would be a bad idea to try to buy something without having sufficient money remaining or any way to rebuild finances after a purchase. It would be an even worse idea if you are involved something that may involve periodic fees. You want to have enough money to handle certain other purchases.

The best thing to think about in this situation is to consider the price of something and add sales taxes (if applicable). Let us use the PlayStation 5 Disc Version example here for a moment. I also suggest you get a little math lesson out of this. Wal-Mart sells the PlayStation 5 for $499.99 USD. Sales tax here in Texas is usually 6.25% or up to 8.25%. Here is the math:

(price of item/service) x (sales tax) = total price

Multiply the price of the item by the sales tax to get the final price. You obviously want to round that total to the nearest hundredth. Then, make sure you have the money to pay for that thing. So in my example, a $499.99 USD PS5 Disc Version coupled with a sales tax of 8.25% here in Texas means you would need to save up $541.24 to buy it. What if you wanted to buy a game or two along with that? What if you wanted to get a gift card to use PlayStation Plus? That means you would have to add those things towards what you want to pay for. That means paying for what you want in addition to anything extra you want with the major purchase you have planned. So that means taking the price of the major purchase and adding on whatever else you want to get with it. That will more than likely equal a higher price tag than just the major purchase you plan to make.

If you do not have enough money to get certain things in addition to making a purchase, you will need to save more money and plan to buy something else later. If you have something that is a periodic payment, such as a subscription to a service or monthly fees, you also have to take that into consideration in having leftover money to handle some other expenses or to add to what you already have. Having no more money and no way to pay for any extra items or expenses can lead to some poor financial health. Think critically about planning any major purchases.

One more important thing to remember about major purchases is that life happens. "Life happens" is not only the motto of this blog, but it is the truth. Trying to save up money for some sort of major purchase can give some obstacles and challenges often times. For example, you may get injured or no longer be employed at a job. These things may require you to find other ways to make money or pay for other things outside of what you want to buy. It is therefore imperative to handle as many financial expenses as possible even while you are trying to buy something you really need or want.

Now it is time to discuss saving money. The next section discusses this matter.

Saving Money

The most important element of making a major purchase is to save money. How you go about saving money depends. Doing whatever it takes to save up money is the challenge.

Some people who barely make any money or are given money will try to save up their finances in hopes of making a major purchase. I hear stories of people who save up a little money and hopefully be able to start a business. Some major companies started out with having just a little money and then saving up to start businesses that ultimately become million-dollar and even billion-dollar companies. Saving up money is a huge part of this process.

If a parent or someone gives you money, this is something to definitely save up for. If you need to use any given money, make sure to use it sparingly. What you want to do is save enough money to make a sort of major purchase. Twitch streamers and YouTube video makers sometimes have streaming services that allow for donations. Some even use the likes of PayPal or Venmo to carry out financial tasks for their work. Regardless, taking advantage of such things is crucial towards saving.

What one certainly wants to do in the case of income and expenses is to make sure expenses do not exceed income. You don't want spending to go over the top.

Saving Tips.

Here are a few random tips of things I know regarding saving money.

• I used to have an account with a bank that charged monthly fees. If you want to save money, try going with a service that does not charge monthly fees. It may also help to have a debit card so you don't have to worry about paying off credit cards. One example of a company that does not charge monthly fees is Bluebird's debit card.

• If you are in a financial pinch and are subscribed to services, get out of subscription services. For example, you may choose to get out of a Netflix subscription just to save some extra money. Getting out of subscription services can help you save some extra money.

• You may also think about signing up for less expensive services or holding back on buying certain things. If you go to a grocery store offering cheaper prices on some of the same items, shop there to save some money.

• If you can make something yourself that costs less than buying from a store, you can try that as well. Some people who have farms or some animals could produce their own products to feed their families. Think about having chickens hatch eggs so you won't need to buy eggs at a grocery store, for example. Some people even meal prep so they will not have so much indecision on what to eat for a day or a week. This can save money especially if your creations are cheaper than something similar you would buy at a store or online.

• Take advantage of sales and discounts. Some things you need or want could be offered for discounted prices. You may be able to score some deals if what you want is sold for a cheaper price than its original price. So take advantage of these opportunities.

• Use coupons if you have any. Coupons will allow you to get certain things for cheap when you go to check out things at stores. For online sales, using certain discount codes work just like coupons. These online codes for online sales can allow you to get a discount like a coupon for goods online.

• Use gift cards or special cards if you have any. If you have a card that can be reloaded with money, be sure to add funds to that card so you will not have to pay so much for anything. Be warned some services may not accept certain cards. For example, I tried buying games on the popular PC game store GOG, and I was unable to purchase games because of my gift card. Be careful in these times.

If you tag some companies on social media with things you make or promote, companies may offer you things as a showing of respect. This can be good to get things without needing to save up money. These usually can come in the form of reviewing things from a company. You may even be compensated for your involvement.

• Want to not spend your own money on things? Have someone else pay for things! This could be great if someone gives you something that you want but have someone else pay for it. You could receive something as a gift. If you are a content creator, try to engage your audience into helping get tips and donations to help you finance something.

• Set up or get involved in crowdfunding. Crowdfunding is where many people join together and donate money towards being able to finance certain things. You may see donation goals for certain online streamers and content creators trying to finance something. For example, an online streamer may set a donation goal towards buying a new gaming system or a better PC or laptop. Even if you do not make your own money, it at least is helpful to have an active, paying crowd to help you with certain financial goals.

• You can sell a lot of things you are not using any more or simply want to get rid of. You can build up your finances and save money to help towards making a major purchase or simply having extra money on hand.

• If you have a method of passable income (such as blogging or selling goods), use those services and get the revenue to help in building your finances. All that has to happen now is saving that extra money up.

Of course, these are only a few suggestions towards saving money. You may be able to find other ways to save money for making purchases.

Saving Money and Major Purchases: Final Thoughts

Money is important to acquiring certain things. When you do have insufficient funds, the task is to save money. How you do so depends on your financial situation and whatever it is you are looking to purchase. What may seem like a want may be a legitimate need for some people. Everyone has different situations in terms of buying something. People may have to sacrifice certain things for which to save money, especially when planning buying something major.

Money is never abundant. We all know money does not grow on trees, so it isn't like you could pick money from trees as you would some fruits. It is best to save money when you can. If you are planning major purchases (or even simple ones), having enough money to cover costs goes a long way towards your personal happiness. You may want to speak with financial advisors or seek solutions from your bank or credit union if you want to make proper decisions regarding your money. Also remember that life can get in the way of making any planned major purchase. Be sure to handle and consider all expenses in addition to making a major purchase.

Make as many smart decisions to handle your finances before, during, and after planning a purchase of any scale. Surely have major purchases in mind, but make sure to be able to pay for all of the associated costs and expenses.

Rejection Because of Kindness?

John B. Marine | December 18, 2023 | | | | Be the first to comment!
Speaking kindly about someone usually should be complimentary. Especially from the heart, it should be uplifting to express kindness. You are trying to show love and respect; not flirting or anything like that. Recently, I endured a situation that I had some pain trying to process in my mind. I will use this space to express something that I still feel horrible about that I felt was not my fault at all. As per usual, I am hoping my experiences will help other people relate and find ways to cope with certain situations. Let's talk!

Rejection Because of Kindness?

Allow me to set the story up.

I often times like to randomly show my appreciation for people by posting kind messages to others. I don't need a special situation or day to do so. I am someone who appreciates people being in your life and those who help you feel happy and maybe mean something to your life.

Last week, I endured what I considered a bad week on Twitch. I am admittedly a chatty person because I want to feel connected to what I love. I do not want to feel like I am just another soul, though technically, I am just another soul. I was banned from Chat on two different channels. One was from discussing something that I felt was not wrong in any such way, the other was from maybe expressing some kind words. The latter situation is what I will be discussing.

The channel's Chat I was banned from is from an up-and-coming DJ and producer whom I've supported by visiting Chat and even buying some songs from this personality online. I've been supportive and enjoyed my time Chatting with others along with the musician. Sometimes, I felt like I am left out or sometimes ignored. I felt connected, but not really connected to that community. I even made some complimentary and appreciative comments on Discord. I felt this showing of kindness, while not flirting or anything of that nature, probably led to me being banned from Chat on that channel. Afterwards, I immediately unfollowed that Channel and all or most social media connections from the musician.

I offered kind and supportive words, and somehow it's taken as something offensive enough to get banned from Chat on someone's Twitch channel? I did not use any sort of inflammatory words or try to flirt with the person. I simply said things along the lines of (not the exact quote), "thank you for your wonderful streams this year. I'm glad to have followed your channel this year and even buy your music online." What happened after? I get banned from Chat on that channel, possibly from kind words I offered elsewhere.

Being the depressed soul, I felt like I did wrong when I felt I was doing right. I even went to bed a bit earlier that night once I learned of showing respect ended up getting you rejected instead of respect. I felt this was another setback and also committing another mistake. Or at least, I committed something that regarded like a mistake rather than trying to be kind.

If you felt this sounds foul, let's discuss this further.

Rejection Because of Kindness? A Further Breakdown

I feel the world has too much negativity. I also feel not much love and respect is genuine. There are those who simply want to be kind to certain individuals for the sake of being kind or because of trying to boost one's "cool appeal." I do not think that way. If there is someone whom I feel is a great person, I let that person know. Depending on how great, I express my own happiness for how much that person means to me and that person's work.

No person in one's own correct mind would ever tell a loved one or someone the person loves to (for example) "go die in a hole," right? You wouldn't wish a loved one to get involved in a dangerous incident or get sick from a potentially fatal disease, would you? Of course not. But at the same time, you do want to say things to others to show your appreciation for them. If one person is hoping to get a job after an interview, you want to hope that person gets the job. You allow your heart to be open and express your support. Yes- words can be as powerful as actions, though actions are often stronger than words. Yet still, words still hold a lot of power.

The only situation(s) where I feel kindness can lead to rejection is if someone is only saying kind things and doing kind things only to be kind. You know- not being sincere about offering support. It may also be possible if someone may intentionally say something things taken as backhanded compliments. However, if you are someone who constantly says kind things to someone and the recipient sees it either as being fake or always being nice, it leads to rejection to those who you feel connected with. It shouldn't be this way! Sadly, though, it can be taken in a negative context.

Explaining Ways.

I have been a person who has had episodes of depression. I had people who I thought were friends feel like they betrayed me. I may even meet people whom I thought were friends, until they either show their true colors to me or direct me to some discussion either illegal or some scam. I feel like I did nothing wrong, yet still I no longer am friends with someone or no longer supportive of me. So because of this, I cherish and admire those whom I feel haven't betrayed me or appreciate what I do for others. There have been people I've encountered who have helped me through some tough times and even served as people I could talk to about my problems. I appreciate those whom have helped me along the way as well as those who help me feel better about myself in life and in general.

Therefore, I feel the need to express my appreciation and respect for others. Do I HAVE to express kindness on a personal level? No. Do I WANT to express kindness on a personal level? Yes. If I feel someone is a great person, I want to express that level of love and respect to that person. I want to show I am real and have been positively influenced. Using the musician as an example, I always have been supportive even to point to buying that musician's music. Maybe if I was traveling, I would even want to go to live shows for that musician. However, to be so kind and supportive to the point of financial support leading to being rejected by that entity, I almost felt like I have wasted my life trying to be kind and supportive.

Showing Respect in a Community Analogy.

The analogy I like to give regarding respect is with restaurants. If you love dining at a major fast food chain, you are just another figure who loves the company, and not many people among that fast food chain would really care about you. This is even though you do matter to that fast food chain's success. However, if you love dining from some small family's kitchen or a small business restaurant, you are like family. It is the reason why I sometimes avoid more popular platforms because it is like getting lost in a big rock concert. As much as you say and personally mean "I love you" or "you're the best," you're drowned out among other people who feel the same way. I don't want to be ignored or seen as something less of a supporter.

Can You Be Respectful Without Being Hateful?

I do understand it is unrealistic to always support someone and always agree with something. Though, nobody wants to be an out-and-out hater. You can always respectfully disagree with things. If being rejected for always being kind, you can always offer constructive criticism and respectful disagreement on things without getting on the hateful side of someone. Remember you are not telling someone you love and respect anything negative. What you want to do is show your support in your own way. The hope is that it is accepted and appreciated. Sometimes, though, it may get misinterpreted or make you feel like a superficial friend or fan of that individual or those individuals. If you get rejected, you feel your respect is going for nothing; and as a result, you want to disassociate yourself as much as possible from whom you originally thought was someone that you truly loved and respected. You end up feeling less of a person because you felt you were doing wrong when all you were trying to do was be kind to people.

Pretty betraying material in this blog post, isn't it? Well, I'll offer some final thoughts next.

Rejection Because of Kindness? Final Thoughts

Do not stop being kind. Do not stop voicing your overall love, respect, and appreciation for others. Support those you love as best as you can and as much as you can. If you try to offer your respect to those you feel are warranting of it, you have done nothing wrong. You have only done wrong when you are either insincere, offer it as a backhanded compliment, or if it is taken in the wrong context. Love and appreciation should be commended, not lead to rejection by the party(-ies) at large. Sadly, some people dislike compliments or don't appreciate being complimented. So you do have to be careful if you like offering your appreciation of others. Again, though- do not stop expressing kindness to those who you feel have made a positive impact on your life.

This has been both a helpful post and a mini-rant. Regardless, I am glad you found some special value in this post. Here is my discussion question to you if you wish to discuss:

Even if not everyone takes compliments easily, should you still prefer your appreciation to others? Also, should showing appreciation for others be warranting of rejection by some individuals?

Not Your Day

John B. Marine | October 31, 2023 | | | | Be the first to comment!
Many days of the year we look forward to and enjoy. Some others, though, not so much. Everyone has certain days of the week or in the year that they fear or have bad memories of. Saying that today is Halloween, this is my day I've feared most. A day that doesn't seem so lucky means you are on heightened alert for trying not to do something that makes you feel horrible inside. Even some simple mistakes can have you feeling horrible.

Always remember each day does not go as planned, and not every day is a good one. It is natural to have good and bad days. What becomes concerning is when a certain day or certain time of year is associated with you having some of your worst memories. My Halloween memories have been bad for me, ranging from being suspended for fighting to having my last day at a university when I was hoping to work towards my previous major of computer animation.

If you are not having a good day, one thing to be happy about is that you are still living, and you did all you could to live a certain day. Things could be much worse than what you experienced or done in a certain day. A bad day should just come and go. Move on to the next day, because tomorrow is a new day. Each upcoming moment should be times for you to try to have better times than what you experienced the previous day.

When it comes to a certain day of the year or days of the year where you begin to cringe, don't look at those days as opportunities to fail. Instead, treat them like you can have a better time on that specific day than you've experienced in the past. For example, you may fear April Fool's Day (which I think should be banned, but that's another story), but the next April Fool's Day could possibly go great for you instead of adding to a certain day being a nightmare for you. All you got to do is just live life as best as you can. It will not be easy, but it is better than cowering in fear or feeling like the heavens do not like you on that day.

Minimalism

John B. Marine | April 27, 2022 | | | | Be the first to comment!
Minimalism is about less is more. Minimalism involves downsizing. The idea is to live your best life having as little as possible. Can you live your best life without having a whole lot? This "John's Life Space" post involves minimalism. I will even share my own insights towards developing this mindset. I am not here to convince you to live minimalist, but I am providing insight on minimalism if you are considering living a minimalist lifestyle or want some insight on minimalism.

Minimalism

In most cases, having so little is usually grounds for having sympathy for others. It makes people want to pour into their resources and try to help people whom they feel are struggling in life. However, minimalism is not like that. Minimalism is about having so few resources yet still living a perfectly fine life.

We have grown as a culture to where having a big living space, having a significant other, and establishing a family makes someone a success in society. When someone lives with so less, some people think they are failures and probably wished they would live the lives of what society deems successful. Some people who live a minimalist lifestyle have all they need and do not have to have loads of money and resources to be happy. It is because some people make changes to themselves and their lives to live happily while not having the best of everything. Such people realize what makes them happy, and they don't rely on having a materialistic mindset to be happy.

When someone does not have all kinds of goods that give status, does it mean someone simply is not successful? Absolutely not. I can speak from personal experience. I honestly never felt bad because I wasn't wearing Nike sneakers or have a Starter jacket unlike other school students. I did not feel required to have what everyone else had in order to feel happy. I was okay having knock-off goods. At least I had certain goods. As I look at the idea of minimalism, I would be greatly served having some of the cheapest material as long as it lasted. I didn't care if I wasn't wearing Nike sneakers or have a Starter jacket. At least I had clothes.

NOTE: Now before I go into further detail, I want to advise everyone that living a minimalist lifestyle does NOT mean people are failures. Minimalist people are not those who failed to live the American dream (at least here in the United States of America). I am not suggesting minimalist types need help. I am just here to discuss minimalist culture.

Why Minimalism?

I will give you a lot of thoughts about minimalism to help prove my points on minimalism. Check it...

Someone would want to imagine what the big deal is with minimalism. Well for a lot of people, having the best of everything does not equate to happiness. When you really think about it, a lot of things we are blessed with or have are not exactly REQUIRED to live our best lives. Some things are almost merely non-essential to our survival. We don't care about that often times, but it is true.

Minimalism can pertain to not being flashy or boisterous. Would you rather drive a basic economy car all in stock form, or would you drive an economy car that has flashy graphics and various aesthetic arrangements (such as body kits, spoilers, etc.)? To the minimalist, an economy car is all someone needs. A minimalist is not at all concerned about being under pressure to the better furnishings to compete with other people. A minimalist may also prefer having bland-looking resources rather than flashy look-at-me resources.

As a sometimes fashion/beauty blogger (PLUG: Visit my fashion/beauty blog! Here: StyleSpace, by John B. Marine :) ), I hear of fashionistas who have a capsule wardrobe to express minimalism. This is where fashionable types get rid of clothes they don't really need or like much and instead stick with favorites. Fashionable types still want a decent wardrobe, but they want to do so without having to shop for new clothes all the time. So a minimalist in this regard will stick to a certain set wardrobe.

Believe it or not, long before I considered the layout of my blogs and some of my other social media material, I had minimalism in mind. I feel I can market myself without having a lot of fancy things. I am proud to have online material that are not filled with bloated nonsense. I also believe in minimalism when I do my videos online. I never had the best of the best, yet I made the most of what little I have. A fancy looking blog will get more attention than a bland one, but I always believed in quality over quantity.

Hopefully this section gives you some ideas on how a minimalist may think.

Minimalism Inspiration: Teemaree.

I want to offer a real example to help express the concept of minimalism. Teemaree, once a veteran of various forms of entertainment as well as being a spokeswoman, had achieved loads of success. She was also one of my favorite go-go dancers. She even spearheaded a first-of-its-kind reality show about the go-go dancing lifestyle. One would think someone like Teemaree is head and shoulders above her peers with this much success. Well, Teemaree admits she was mostly trapped and needed guidance. So what she did was a lot of deep thinking and faith. Today, Teemaree is a life coach, author, and creator of "Transform With Teemaree," "Invite God In," and "ALLSWELL Lifestyle." Her life coaching is a mix of offering life advice as well as providing religious insight. Speaking of Teemaree's insight, let me share this with you:

^ Who Is Teemaree?

Teemaree isn't the only example of minimalist lifestyle. She is the best example to me to discuss minimalism that I can provide. I am using Teemaree as an example to help set up discussion minimalism using a real-life example.

Minimalism: How to Start?

Minimalism is not something that can be easily implemented. I do not know all of the nuances of minimalism, but I may help you get started. I will share some of my own minimalist insights and thoughts to help give you some inspiration if you want to take on a minimalist lifestyle. Follow my lead...

Minimalism: What Do You Need?

The first thing to consider about minimalism is to think about what you have and what you need. Especially if you are going to live "off the grid," you have to seriously consider what things are important to you in the moment. You will have to learn to sacrifice some comforts in trying to live the minimalist life you wish to live.

If I lived as a minimalist, I am very involved in technology. So what I would need is powerful WiFi Internet. I want to hold onto my two TVs, my HDTV monitor, my printer, and my Chromebook. I may even want to go from a PC to a decent-spec laptop. If I had the money, I'd invest in an HP laptop that costs around $500 USD (or maybe $600 USD) that has better specifications than my 2014-ish budget PC. A lot of space on my desktop would be gone, and I could use it around the house even if power goes out. As a gamer, I want to hold onto my systems. I don't need a gaming PC when I can do just fine with a simple PC or laptop that can still play a good amount of games while also serving as my personal PC/laptop when not gaming. I would want to cook with a microwave and an air fryer. I would want a place with decent lighting. I feel lighting lightens my mood.

Most important about minimalism is making money. You need to find some sort of revenue stream or grind to stay financially afloat. There isn't much I do to generate income. So in this regard, I would struggle unless I had some proper form of making money.

You also must consider utilities. If you can invest in solar power, it would be cleaner for the environment and possibly even energy efficient. You also need decent plumbing to handle things like taking baths and showers as well as washing dishes. If you plan on getting into farming, you certainly need to consider decent utilities for planting gardens and such.

Minimalism can be a challenge if you have a significant other and/or a family. Be mindful of needs for you as a couple and in maintaining a family when being minimalist. You have to account for taking care of your lover/spouse in addition to your family should you choose to live as a minimalist couple or as a minimalist family.

These are just a number of things to think about when wanting to think minimalist.

Minimalism: Where Would You Live?

Do you prefer living within the big city, living in the suburbs of a major city, or out in the country? Do you even want to live in your current state or country or move elsewhere? You want to be able to live in a place where you can comfortably live your life. The popularity of tiny houses these days make for a unique challenge of trying to live without having to pay high mortgage rates. You would be surprised at how some people maximize their lives living minimalist style. If you do think about the tiny house lifestyle or convert a van or bus into a home, that is something else to consider your minimalist lifestyle in.

I have seen people live in places ranging from tiny homes to vehicles converted into homes. This even includes people who have trailer homes. If I had one such home, I kind of would want a two-story home to possibly enjoy great views and maybe even sit on the balcony outside. Because I am so much of a city person, I feel an affordable housing option within an uptown setting or downtown setting would be the best for me. I wouldn't want to shy too far away from family and friends here in Houston. Look around on various tiny home retailers and builders to think about your minimalist lifestyle.

Minimalism: Sacrifices.

Just like almost anything in life, you have to learn to make sacrifices. A lot of the luxuries you are accustomed to can be given up to live the minimalist lifestyle. Even though air conditioning seems necessary, it is actually a luxury. Living here in Texas, I can't afford to sweat in all of this Texas heat! So I would need a great solution for air conditioning.

If you are the materialistic type, you have to realize some goods you enjoy aren't always goods you NEED. Fashionistas- that means you can do without Louboutin pumps, Michael Kors handbags, Chanel espadrilles, and various other luxury goods.

Most importantly, the biggest move you can make in adopting minimalism is to drop your materialistic lifestyle. Minimalism forces you to think less about owning everything and only focus on essentials. You can live better by understanding the essentials rather than feel like you need material goods to be happy. I will leave this discussion with a little quote:

"You can't have everything. Where would you put it?"

-Steven Wright

I want to present some Final Thoughts on this topic to close out my minimalism discussion. Please look at the next section.

Minimalism: Final Thoughts

Minimalism is about living your best life having only so many resources. Minimalists shouldn't be seen as those who fail in life; instead, minimalists are more concerned with making the most out of live by having the least of resources. Do not think a minimalist has given up on life or should be living a luxurious lifestyle. In fact, a lot of minimalist types have all they need to live a great life. They just do not need status symbols to prove their worth to the world. They also do not need status symbols to be happy with their lives.

A minimalist does not need help; minimalists just choose to live their lives without many of the luxuries many of us consider essential. While minimalists try to live with less, they don't need help or need to get psychological help. If you are a minimalist, you don't need a mansion, expensive cars, fancy gadgets, and the like to live happily. You live on bare essentials. Minimalism allows you to focus on more important things without being bombarded with many [usually unnecessary] things.

If you do choose to live a minimalist life, you need to plan carefully. Think about all of your immediate needs and wants. It is not easy to live a minimalist lifestyle without actually planning ahead. Be prepared to make sacrifices and let go of things you don't think are essential to you. Adjusting from normal life to minimalist life will NOT be an easy transition. However, moving to minimalism or tiny living is possible and doable.

Minimalists have not given up on life or need help; they just are living with as few resources as possible based on their needs. Not everyone is successful with the amount of money they have or the goods they own. They don't need outside help or sympathy for living a simple lifestyle devoid of status symbols. Minimalists just simply make "less is more" work. When you think about it, we do not need too much to live our best lives and to be happy. If we were not so fixated on having certain goods and resources to be happy, life can be much more enjoyable than what many of us make it out to be. Minimalists should be commended for helping a lot of us realize this about life in this regard. So if you are considering going minimalist, good for you! Minimalism is the best way to admire and appreciate what it really takes to live happily and freely.

Survival in Life

John B. Marine | June 02, 2021 | | | | | | Be the first to comment!
Today, June 2, 2021; marks 20 years since I graduated from High School. This gives me an opportunity to express some motivational content. It was a long road ahead, especially in my Senior year. I will use this time to offer hope for people who fear they will not graduate or fulfill any major goal. So welcome to my "John's Life Space" blog, a blog regarding life issues.

Before I Begin...

If any of you have recently graduated from grade school or college, congratulations!

Survival in Life!

Before I get into sharing my main advice, let me share a story with you. This will help set the tone for me offering advice on trying to get through some of life's toughest moments.

My Life Survival Story.

The setting is 1997. I began High School after facing a lot of troubles in Middle School. Halloween 1997- I was suspended for the first time ever, as I was suspended for fighting. I started feeling down on myself and hating the outlook I had on life. This was where I began developing depression in my life. Fast forward to 1999. I got suspended one last time and was sent to an alternative High School. Some of the ones who hated on me attended that other school. As I did well in my classes, I then was offered to go to an alternative magnet High School mostly devoted towards technology later that year. Yes- THREE High Schools in one year!

In no way was I happy with myself or where my life was headed. I already missed many of my friends from my first High School. And as my mother was constantly upset about my rough progress through High School, I felt like I had to make graduation happen at this alternative magnet High School, because I'd hate to have to look to later in my life to get my GED. It was tough, but I pulled through the 1999-2000 school year. This even included completing my Science Fair project.

Then came the 2000-2001 school year. OH, boy... The early part of this school year was pretty okay as I managed to put forth decent grades. Then came a shock in 2001- I might not graduate because of two classes I failed at my first High School. This meant that instead of going to school just Monday-Friday, it meant I basically went to school EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK. The two classes were at a community college I would eventually get my Associate's in the Arts from later in my life. The schedule in 2001 was Monday-Friday, Friday nights, Saturday mornings, and Sunday afternoon- just to get enough credits to graduate from High School. I felt even more hopeless knowing what challenges I was facing. If I failed to make it through High School, I'd never hear the end of it. I will have failed my family if I was unable to overcome these obstacles. All I could do was try to pass all of my classes so I could graduate. That's even if I barely squeak by. At this point, I cared more about defeating my demons rather than try to chase perfection. I ended up passing my extra High School classes well. Now it's about trying to get enough passing credit to somehow graduate from High School. Even as I was rewarded at the Texas Scholars banquet in April 2001, I felt further motivated to pass my remaining classes. As late May casted its shadow onto me, I was hoping my hard work to defeat my demons and try to stand tall would be worth it. Turns out...

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

On June 2, 2001; I would see many of my new friends and fellow Class of 2001 for maybe the last time in person. More importantly, getting my cap, gown, and class ring proved that I made it. I faced all kinds of pressure in my life as well as things outside of my life and survived. This was the day and the moment I never thought would happen. I almost felt too disappointed in myself to feel I would never graduate from High School. Would it have been better if I had graduated impressive grades? Absolutely. However, when you've experienced some of the ugliest circumstances and have only little hope or encouragement, you'll gladly take victory over defeat. I was told by my Principal that there was "a surprise for me." So at the graduation ceremony, I was wondering what the surprise was. Turns out... even though I ranked dead last among my 15-Senior class, I was the Most Improved Student! When I found this out, I was SHOCKED! I couldn't believe my hopeless self graduated from High School while becoming the Most Improved Student of my class. I immediately went up on stage to receive my honors when I was called up. This remains one of the biggest accomplishments in my life even today. A depressing chain of events took me under, but I ultimately rose up to reach glory. Moreover, a burden on my (then) 18-year old self was lifted.

Looking back on my life now, I wished I didn't face such tough circumstances. I wished I didn't have to even go through going to two different High Schools besides the one I always wanted to graduate from. Sometimes in life, you don't always get what you want, and conditions will not always be favorable for you. The most important thing is that I worked to try to instill confidence in myself as well as try to prove to my parents that I am not a failure (as I was thinking at the time). I wanted to prove that my parents I was taught well to overcome any obstacle regardless of how successful I am. The point was- I made it. I survived. I am not afraid to admit I was a failing student when my life took a turn for the worse. What would have made me less of a person is if I quit and allowed my demons to win over me. I'd rather just squeak by rather than completely give up. You only get one chance in life, and if you blow it, you'll have to live with the consequences forever. It's why I tell people I am not any real success story. I am someone who found a way to win, even if it isn't an impressive one. A sports analogy would be that I managed to win a game by only a few points or win a race by less than one second. My victory wasn't impressive, but I achieved victory nonetheless.

Now that you know my story, it is time I offer some advice.

Survival Lessons Learned

What can you learn from me? How can I help others in a similar bind? Let me try to offer some points to help you.

You CAN Pull Through.

When faced with adversity, it is natural to feel as if you are completely hopeless. However, you are NOT! Even unconventional and unlikely methods of survival can be enough to help you deal through tough times. Once I felt my life go downhill, I had feelings that I would never again succeed. I felt I could never please myself or my family and friends. Athletes know this feeling of being down and needing some sort of run to reverse misfortune.

Doubting Yourself NEVER Helps.

While it is okay to feel you will not pull through, it is important for you to avoid feeling down and out when there is still time to improve. If you feel down on yourself, it just gets tougher trying to get back to a respectable base. Time you could spend loving yourself and giving yourself a chance ultimately adds to why you will never succeed in the eyes of others. All doubting yourself will do is only make accomplishing your goals [unnecessarily] harder. Remember- you are your own worst critic. Which leads to my next point...

It is Never Over Until It's Over!

Sports athletes and sports teams don't give up when there is still a chance to win. That is, unless there is no hope of actually coming back to win (for example, bring down three touchdowns in football with one minute left in the game). Even having little time to make a run at winning is still enough time to make magic happen. You must always give yourself a chance and make the most of your situation.

Celebrate Small Victories.

Completing long-term goals often includes succeeding at short-term goals. If you lost some weight by exercising or eating better, those are victories. At least they help towards a goal in having a certain body or being able to fit into certain clothes again. Small victories for me was in having decent report card reports towards passing classes. Work to accomplish your small goals to eventually accomplish the larger goal at hand. When you accomplish one task, keep accomplishing as many tasks as possible to reach your ultimate goal. Do not give up until you reach that ultimate goal.

Eyes on the Prize!

If you lose sight of your main objective or feel victory is out of reach, you will have already failed. The greatest individuals are celebrated most when they face adversity and defeat their demons. A sports team that comes from behind to win a game (and even a championship) are often the most revered and respected than someone who completely gives up. You can let your demons defeat you, or you can toughen up and try to win at any cost. Just remember- keep your eyes on the prize! You worked hard to get to this level; finish the fight.

Do YOU, Not Others.

Okay- this is going to sound selfish, but it is better you do for yourself rather than try to impress others. You are not going to impress everyone. Only you know you best. So make sure to take any measures to take care of yourself and build up your confidence so you can accomplish your tasks. If you focus too much on trying to impress others or feel like you have to constantly feel you have to prove yourself every time, you are only making it easier to fail. Just worry about your own needs and try to get the job done as best as you can. As the saying goes, "If you want something done right, do it yourself."

And finally...

Victory is Victory.

I did not graduate with impressive grades. I did not graduate with being happy and having high self-esteem. I basically survived and ultimately defeated my demons in High School. I will gladly take victory after having worked for it. I accomplished my ultimate task even if it was not pretty. My ultimate task was to graduate from High School, and I did just that. Work to achieve victory and regardless of style points, achieve victory nonetheless.

These bits of advice can help you when you are down. However, what if you tried you could and still fail? That will be answered in the next section...

What if You Do Ultimately Fail?

You did your best. Beating yourself up over failure is not going to help you in the future. You just need to think about what you need to do to learn from your fail and try to do better next time in a similar situation. Even if the pressure to perform is self-inflicted, you have to love yourself enough to feel you can accomplish anything. I did not have the best life as a High Schooler, and I'd be lying to you if I told you I had life easy and always made the best results. I even look back at bad experiences in my life and thought about how I could have done better if I faced the same situations again. There are even times I work on my computer and feel sad knowing I could have done better even if I barely succeeded in life. I didn't ask for the tough circumstances I faced, but I came through regardless, even if not in any impressive way.

Most importantly, do not let yourself be defined by your failures. No one is going to win every battle and every contest all the time. We sometimes need to experience failure to better appreciate being successful. Let failure motivate you, but not define you. Don't have a stigma of failure that curses your ability to ever be as great as you want to be. If you develop this stigma, you feel every attempt to make yourself better is a foregone conclusion that you will fail no matter what. Having this stigma only makes it harder for you to feel happy or feel you will ever become any kind of success.

Be sure to always give yourself a chance even when you feel hopeless and/or worthless. Not everyone can stand for themselves, and if you can't fend for yourself, it is always okay to ask for support from family and friends. Get all the motivation and hope you need. Having a support system will help make life better and better your chances of accomplishing a goal.

No matter what life throws at you, it is best you are well equipped and prepared to take on life's challenges. You must love yourself before you expect anyone else to love you. You must believe in yourself before expecting anyone to believe in you. Survival is possible. You just need to work to make it happen. Somehow, perhaps even you too will be able to accomplish goals despite insurmountable odds.

These brought back some difficult memories for me, but I always try to provide happiness and hope while discussing tough matters. I hope you can appreciate my efforts in this blog post. I also hope you can stay with my blog(s) for more content and for more advice. I want to help make the world a better place any way I feel I am capable of doing so. Care to discuss? Here's my question for you:

How did you overcome obstacles you felt you couldn't win? Or did you experience any extreme circumstances in your life that you were able to overcome somehow?

I'd like for you to Subscribe/Follow and support my work any way you can. I would greatly appreciate your kindness and support. Thank you for reading! Take care and be well.

Perfectionism

John B. Marine | February 29, 2020 | | | | | | Be the first to comment!
Perfection is about being best of the best. To some people, perfection is the ONLY way to accomplish something. Some people can not live with being less than perfect. People will make mistakes. It is how people deal with perfection that make us who we are and how we deal with things when they are less than perfect. Can you live with failure? Can you live with your mistakes? Some can; others can not. So this blog post has to do with perfection.

Perfection

What is perfect? To many, perfect means you do something to where nothing can be done wrong and that it is completely foolproof. It means you have done everything to where there is no fault or dispute. It is as if no wrong can be done. While perfect is what many people want out of life, not many can live with making mistakes. Perfection can take you only so far. One can become fixated to perfection to where the thought of potential failure is out of the mindset of most people. At that point, one may have already failed if one only looks at being perfect and successful. It is this one-track mindset that defeats most people before they even endure failure. It is also important to note that what people consider perfect varies from person to person. If you look at perfection like sports, a team that finishes undefeated all the way to a championship or simply an undefeated season is perfect. A team that has never trailed in any game or season can be considered perfect.

Being a Perfectionist.

Most people can't live with making mistakes or being seen as a mistake. So a perfectionist tries to make the most of everything to where there are no faults whatsoever. Everything has to be done in a way to where few or no mistakes are present. Things that are perfect have no faults of any kind. To accomplish this, one has to focus on trying not to fail. Sometimes, someone may be nearing perfection without even knowing or acknowledging it. As another sports example, a Perfect Game in baseball or softball is where a pitcher records Outs against all of the opposing batters without issuing a walk (or base on balls). If a Walk is issued in a Perfect Game attempt, the Perfect Game ends and is now playing for a No-Hitter. Perfection and perfection attempts come in many forms and entail a number of factors.

Alright- I will admit. I am a perfectionist myself. I focus too much on trying to make everything as perfect as possible, or I feel under pressure to make sure everything is done properly. Even I have made countless mistakes that I am either aware of or may not be aware of. I still do everything to the best of my ability because I know what I am capable of and what I want out of anything I put my mind to.

Since I mentioned this ad nauseam, let me get to the next talking point...

Can You Live With Not Being Perfect?

Let us say your pursuit of perfection falls short. Can you live with yourself, or do you consistently lament missing out on historical greatness? Your own passion and dedication determine if you feel perfection is the way to go. You may even find your inability to do things perfectly makes you a failure. Even the most successful entities have stumbled. You can't be perfect all the time. Living with some sort of blemish on your talent can take its toll on you. Understandably, while mistakes will be made, we become disappointed. The real issue is in trying to not be too fixated on perfection.

Now for some final thoughts.

Perfection: Final Thoughts

Focus more on doing things as best as you can rather than chase perfection. Sure, perfection will make you better regarded and better respected, but countless people have committed and been involved in various failing moments. Do not be afraid to accept or admit failure. Just make sure to rebound proper for the future. Perfection will only stress you in trying to always do things to where they can go no wrong. Do not put yourself under any unnecessary pressure to be perfect.

That's all. Thank you for visiting "John's Life Space!"

Autism

John B. Marine | April 02, 2019 | | | Be the first to comment!
(UPDATED: April 8, 2019)

Autism is a medical condition that can adversely impact one's mental and social skills. Various influences in conjunction with autism can affect learning and actions. I will try to bring autism to light with this blog post. PLEASE do not take this post as a definitive resource on autism, because I do not know enough about autism to professionally discuss it. So this is more instead a digest on autism.

LATEST UPDATE(S)/REVISION(S):

APR 9 2019 - added an extra resource

Austism

I don't know everything about autism. Do not look at this post as a definitive look at autism. Let's still talk about autism here on "John's Life Space."

Autism Awareness
^ from: physioguru.com - "Always Unique Totally Intelligent Sometimes Mysterious."

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) involves a number of personal traits that result in problems communicating with others, repetitive behaviors, and more. It involves things such as elaborately explaining things in fancy ways while also having photographic memory of things. Pictures I've seen shown autism meaning "Always Unique Totally Intelligent Sometimes Mysterious." Males are more likely to have autism than females. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 1 in every 59 children are diagnosed with autism. Much like most cancers or certain diseases, if autism detected early in children, then things can properly be arranged to help treat autism or autistic symptoms. There is no cure for autism at present.

To my knowledge, I have no memory of being formally diagnosed with autism. I do admit there have been times where I have elaborately described things to others. I sometimes explain things in elaborate and creative ways. I sometimes showcase things in elaborate and creative ways. But again, to my knowledge, I have never formally been diagnosed with autism.

Autism is usually detected and acknowledged among children more than adults.

For More Information...

I am not adept in autism. When it comes to resources to help you understand autism better, I have provided the following links to this blog post. Take a look at these resources to learn more about autism:

Autism Speaks
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
Understanding Autism - The Basics
Autism Spectrum Disorder (Mayo Clinic)
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (CDC)
Autism Awareness - The Importance of Knowledge

(ADDED: April 8, 2019)
To help support autism research and such, try this link:

The Autism Site

I may provide more resources of interest if I can find some more helpful resources on autism.

I hope you liked this post. Maybe I did enough to convince you in regards to making awareness to autism. Thank you for reading! Take care and be well.
